Job summary
To work in one of the dedicated pool porter posts in the porters' roster, providing a comprehensive hospital portering service.
Duties include transfer of patients between wards and departments, equipment, consumables, catering products and trolleys, mail, case notes, specimens, medical gases, linen and furniture.

Main duties of the job
Move patients by bed, trolley and wheelchair as directed by department staff in accordance with agreed procedures. Move case request forms, specimens, medicines, equipment, furniture and other items between wards and departments in line with agreed procedures. Respond to non-scheduled task instructions from the Helpdesk via the handheld device. Ensure non-scheduled task response and completion times are recorded on the handheld device. Report any issues with or delays to the task so that a full audit trail is maintained.

Job responsibilities
  • Assist with the transportation of patients from the wards and day surgery units
  • To communicate with all patients that are being transported within the hospital in a sensitive and tactful manner, whilst building a ensuring they understand any instructions to maintain their safety whilst being transported
  • Transport patients within the hospital in conjunction with Trust policies and departmental procedures
  • Undertake errand duties as and when required by the portering teams
  • To comply with specific instructions and working patterns when based in a particular department
  • Maintain high standards of infection control and hand hygiene during the performance of his/her duties
  • To carry out all duties in accordance with the Trust’s Health & Safety Policy and local departmental working practices
  • Due to the 24/7 nature of hospital operations, candidates must be available to work a flexible schedule that includes rotating shift pattern, including days, nights, and weekends.

  • Able to provide and receive routine information

  • Able to operate and manipulate equipment including trolleys, wheelchairs, electric vehicle and observe a personal duty of care when using equipment
  • Able to follow policies and work within well established procedures
  • Able to process own timesheets and participate in surveys or audits as necessary
  • Able to cope with a frequent requirement to exert moderate physical effort for several short periods and an occasional requirement to exert intense physical effort for several short periods in a shift
  • Able to maintain general awareness and sensory attention

Because this role involves working within a healthcare environment, we have a duty of care to ensure the safety of our patients and staff. As part of our commitment to safeguarding, we will help you complete a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check. This is a standard procedure for hospital staff to ensure a safe environment for everyone.

Successful applicant within this role will be expected to cover shifts across the full 24 hour period including weekends and bank holidays, this will initially be a structured rota pattern but may be adjusted to meet the needs of the service.
