Job Description

Graduate Teaching Assistant

Are you a graduate looking to gain hands-on experience, prior to starting a teacher training programme in September 2026?

Could you utilise your skills and provide tailored 1:1 and small group support to under-achieving pupils?

If so… this Graduate Teaching Assistant opportunity is what you’re looking for!

*** Graduate Teaching Assistant
*** January start until July 2026
*** £90 - £100 per day
*** ‘Good’ 3-form entry primary school, Yardley
*** 1:1 and small group support across all classes

What you will do:
In this role you will support learning across the school, starting in Nursery and Reception where you help children with early learning, play based activities and routines. Each morning you will lead or support reading practice with pupils in Years 2, 3, 4 and 5, helping to build reading fluency and confidence. You will deliver targeted phonics interventions in Years 2 and 3, following the school’s phonics programme and recording progress. You will also run a small maths tuition group with Year 6 pupils, focusing on key skills, problem solving and preparation for end of year assessments.

About you:
Clear communicator, organised, and steady in busy classrooms. You explain ideas in plain English, spot misconceptions early, and help pupils move towards independence.

Requirements
  • Degree – 2:2 or above in any subject.
  • Communication – Strong written and verbal skills.
  • Enhanced DBS – Held already or willingness to obtain.
  • Desire to work in education/with children – Real commitment to inclusion and progress.
  • Experience working with children – Any relevant experience is desirable but not essential.

The School:
This ‘Good’ Yardley primary is three form entry with calm, consistent routines from arrival to home time. Teams co-plan and share high quality materials, including model texts, worked examples and intervention packs, so you are never starting from scratch. Reading is prioritised with systematic phonics and daily guided reading. Maths follows small, connected steps with frequent retrieval and shared methods across year groups. Inclusion is embedded. The SEN team runs regular plan–do–review cycles and keeps visual supports and regulation spaces ready to use. New colleagues receive a structured induction, weekly bite size CPD, and coaching drop ins with precise, usable next moves. You get the conditions to show impact quickly and build a strong case for initial teacher training.

How to Apply
Submit your CV via the job advert. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to a brief call and an in-school observation. Early applications are encouraged, as the school may appoint before the closing date.

Due to the volume of applications, only shortlisted candidates will be contacted.
