Job Description

SEN Academic Mentor

Want meaningful SEN experience before Educational Psychology or ITT?

Help KS3 and KS4 pupils access learning through clear routines and focused support.

*** SEN Academic Mentor
*** £82 - £98 per day
*** January 2026 until July 2026
*** ‘Good’ secondary school, Sandwell
*** 1:1 support across the KS3 & KS4 curriculum

The Role:
You will deliver consistent 1:1 support that makes classroom tasks clear and manageable. Before lessons, you will preview key vocabulary and task demands, agree a simple plan and set up checklists so the pupil can start work quickly. In class, you will break activities into small steps, model examples, use now/next prompts and quiet cues to maintain focus, and help with transitions so movement between rooms stays calm. After lessons, you will capture quick outcomes, note triggers and wins, and share next actions with subject teachers, Heads of Year and the SENCO. You will coach basic study habits, including equipment checks, starter routines and homework planning, and you will always follow safeguarding and behaviour procedures.

The Candidate & Requirements:
You are calm, observant and clear in your language. You follow plans, act on feedback quickly and help pupils grow independence.

  • Degree, 2:2 or above in Psychology, Education or a closely related field.
  • Communication, strong written and spoken English.
  • Enhanced DBS, held already or willingness to obtain.
  • Desire to work in education/with young people, strong interest in SEN and wellbeing.
  • Experience with children or young people, mentoring or tutoring is desirable but not essential.

The School:
This ‘Good’ Sandwell secondary uses simple, consistent routines that keep lessons purposeful. Departments share sequenced curricula, model responses and common assessments, so your support aligns with teaching. Reading is reinforced with guided practice and vocabulary work, while maths and science are taught in small, connected steps with regular low-stakes checks to surface gaps early. The inclusion team runs plan–do–review cycles and provides practical tools such as visuals, timers and checklists, with access to regulation spaces when needed. New colleagues receive a clear induction, weekly CPD and regular coaching drop-ins with precise, usable targets.

How to Apply
Apply through the job advert with your CV. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to a brief call and an in-school observation. Roles may close early if filled.

Due to the number of applications, only successful applicants will be contacted.
